Milan frontrunners to secure Agger signature
• Reports claim Milan to launch £8.5m bid for Agger
Liverpool's prospects of securing Daniel Agger on a new long-term contract appear to have diminished after the Denmark international's agent travelled to Milan to discuss a potential move to San Siro.
Agger's representative, Per Steffensen, met the general sporting director of Milan, Ariedo Braida, and the agent Rino Foschi yesterday despite Liverpool's insistence that the 24-year-old defender will not be sold during this transfer window. The trio dined at the city centre restaurant Giannino and their meeting will fuel Liverpool's suspicion that Steffensen is seeking to engineer a move for Agger before the end of the month or, more likely, at the end of the season.
Reports in Italy last week claimed Milan would make an offer of £8.5m for Agger this month to tempt Liverpool to part with a player who could activate a release clause of £7m in the summer. The Anfield club have denied the clause exists but they do face the possibility of Agger activating the Webster Ruling and buying out the final 12 months of his contract at the end of this campaign.
Publicly the £5.8m signing from Brondby in 2006 has repeatedly claimed he wishes to extend his contract with Liverpool. Negotiations between Steffensen and Liverpool, however, have been fraught for several months, with the club refusing to meet demands to double Agger's £35,000-a-week wage. The Liverpool manager, Rafael Benítez, is determined to resist any approach for Agger this month as he aims to keep the bulk of his title-chasing squad intact but the threat of losing the Dane for a cut-price fee in the summer has intensified following Steffensen's visit to Milan.
Meanwhile Liverpool are to send scouts to watch St Johnstone's 18-year-old left-back Paul Hanlon in the next 10 days. Hanlon, who turns 19 next week and joined the Scottish First Division club on a one-month loan from Hibernian at the beginning of January, returned his latest impressive performance in Tuesday night's Scottish Cup defeat by Rangers.

- All this article has really pointed out to me is that agents are, and always will be, money-grabbing bloodsuckers. None of this seems to be coming from Agger himself but solely from Steffensen, who I am sure, would recieve a hefty cut of whatever deal he can manage to wangle out of this one.
- I'm sorry but doubling £35,000 a week makes me feel sick. I know its small fry compared to a lot of others in the Premier League but (if it's true) it's disgusting nontheless. That would make £70,000 a week. One week. Which would be what?...£3,640,000 a year. Fuck off.
- I cut out a bit of the article, I've linked to the source so you can read the rest there but it's fairly irrelevant, but left the bit about Hanlon, because I think he's the shit, basically. Don't know how well he would do in the Premier League if he did go (and it's early days, this is just an alleged scouting mission afterall), but he's an excellent wee player up north.

With that said, I wouldn't be surprised if Agger ended up leaving, against his will or of his own volition. He has just come off a long injury, and although nobody expected him to just waltz back into first team football, Skrtel definitely has his spot taken care of and I doubt Agger will see much playing time once Skrtel fights his way back onto the line up. Maybe a fresh start in Milan is what might be seen as ultimately what he needs, especially since Milan's defense is in such dire need for fresh legs, with Maldini leaving and the aging side not getting any younger or faster. More often than not, it does comes down to the starting regularity and the pay. Let's just hope Agger and Liverpool can find some sort of agreement that keeps him here.

He's played in a handful of games since he arrived. He picked up a persistant injury in a game against Sevilla in late September (round 3 or 4) - if I remember correctly, that is. I don't follow Espanyol, but I do watch two La Liga matches per weekend (and naturally follow the table like the crazy wannabe-Catalan that I am, haha), and I haven't seen him play once since his signing. :/
